Lil City Voices | Community Corner
The Chase Through Our Neighborhood
— by Lil City Staff

It started as an evening walk through the neighborhood, the kind of quiet routine families here have done for years. Then came the sirens. Then the blur of a white e-bike, a young boy no older than 14, flying past with a police cruiser in pursuit. The scene unfolded on streets where children play and families stroll. A boy on a modified bike, racing up Russi Ranch, cutting onto the goat trail, speeding back faster than most cars travel that road.
The witness who shared this story wasn't looking to punish a child. She simply wanted parents to know: evading a cop is a felony. Her post sparked a divided community conversation. Some neighbors expressed genuine fear, worried someone will eventually get hurt. Others recalled similar close calls, kids in dark clothes at night with no lights, near misses with cars. A few dismissed it as kids being kids, even joking about "GTA in real life."
But many pushed back hard. They pointed to parents who look the other way, who buy modified bikes without understanding the law, who don't realize their child's choices can lead to felony charges…or worse. One neighbor reminded the group of a tragic case in Davis where an e-bike rider killed someone on a trail. Another mentioned parents in Southern California being prosecuted for allowing illegally modified bikes.
At the heart of this conversation is a question every parent must answer: what are we teaching our children about responsibility and safety? The boy in the white helmet likely thought he was having an adventure. What he may not realize is that choices like this follow you. The hope, as one neighbor put it, is simply this: that the parents see this post, recognize their son, and have that hard conversation. Not out of anger, but out of love. Because the alternative is far worse than a grounded kid and a confiscated bike. ❤️🩹
