Lil City Voices | Community Corner
The Wisdom We Used to Laugh At
— by Lil City Staff

There was a time when napping felt like wasting daylight. When sitting on a porch with a cup of coffee seemed like something only grandparents did. When wearing comfortable clothes at home meant you'd given up. And then, somewhere along the way, something shifted.
A recent conversation caught fire online when people started sharing the "old person" habits they've quietly adopted, and now swear by. Not because they're trendy or Instagram-worthy. But because they simply make life better.
It started small. A 30-year-old admitted to crocheting, being in pajamas by 2 p.m., and preferring a phone call to a text thread. Then came the confessions: making coffee the night before so it's ready at sunrise. Sending actual holiday cards through the mail. Keeping fruit on the desk and eating it without thinking. Turning off notifications. Reading the local newspaper. Using an alarm clock instead of a phone.
What followed was a quiet revolution of self-care disguised as aging. People described afternoon naps with dogs on their laps, sitting in the dark waiting for the sun to rise, and the sacred ritual of making the bed first thing in the morning. One person wrote about waking up early just to listen to their wife move through her routine, eyes still closed, before a soft kiss on the forehead signaled it was time to start the day.
That's the thing about these habits. They're not really about age. They're about finally giving yourself permission to slow down, to find joy in small rituals, to prioritize comfort over performance. They're about realizing that a life well-lived isn't measured in how busy you are, but in how present you've learned to become.
So maybe the joke's on us. The naps, the early bedtimes, the birdwatching, the quiet mornings with coffee, they weren't signs of getting old. They were survival strategies all along. And the wisest among us figured it out decades ago.
