One Minute That Could Save a Life: Why Hands-Only CPR Matters ⛑️
— by Lil City Staff

Most people never think about CPR until the moment they need it. A Cameron Park woman’s story is a good reason to think about it now. Earlier this year, her heart suddenly stopped while she was at home with her husband. He called 911 right away, and the firefighters and paramedics who arrived were able to bring her back after about nine minutes without a pulse. Recently, she met those responders to thank them in person.
What stands out is everything that happens before help arrives. According to the American Heart Association, nearly three out of four cardiac arrests outside a hospital happen at home. That means the person who has to act first is usually a spouse, a parent, or a kid, not a paramedic. Fewer than 1 in 10 people survive, but starting CPR right away can double or triple the chance of survival. Those first few minutes are often the difference, and they belong to whoever happens to be in the room.
That’s why local fire officials keep encouraging every household to learn CPR. It isn’t only for nurses, firefighters, or people with medical training. It’s for the ordinary moments, a quiet evening at home, a conversation cut off mid-sentence, when the person who loves you is the only one there. The woman in this story got to celebrate another birthday, hug her grandson before he left for college, and go back to work she cares about, all because the right people acted quickly.
It’s easy to assume someone else in the room will know what to do, or to put off learning because it feels like something that only happens to other families. But at home, there often is no “someone else.” If something happened tonight, would the people in your household be ready, and who in your life would you want to have that confidence?
