Why Early Detection Still Matters Most in the Fight Against Breast Cancer 🎗️
— by Lil City Staff

Breast cancer touches far more lives than most people realize. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 320,000 women and about 2,700 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year. Behind that number is a statistic worth remembering: when the disease is caught while still localized, the five-year survival rate is 99%. The difference between catching it early and catching it late can be enormous.
That’s the message Dignity Health Mercy Hospital of Folsom is emphasizing this Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Hospital leaders point to advances in screening, including AI-enhanced 3D mammography, which can help spot abnormalities earlier, often when cancers are most treatable. Treatment has progressed too, with targeted therapies and immunotherapy designed to go after cancer cells while limiting harm to healthy tissue. Support services like nurse navigation and genetic counseling are also available to help patients through the physical, emotional, and practical sides of a diagnosis.
Still, even the best technology only helps people who actually walk through the door. Screenings are easy to postpone, whether because of busy schedules, fear of the results, or the feeling that everything is probably fine. The hospital encourages anyone unsure about their own risk to talk with their doctor about personal risk factors and to set up a consistent screening schedule based on their medical history.
It’s a conversation that often doesn’t happen until someone is already worried. Have you ever talked openly with family or friends about screenings, and what made that conversation easier or harder to start? Sometimes one person scheduling an appointment is all it takes to get others to do the same.
