What’s Folsom’s Zoo Really Worth?

— by Lil City Staff

When the City of Folsom adopted its $307.6 million operating budget this month, a quiet debate broke out over a beloved institution: Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary. The zoo costs roughly $1.3 million a year to operate, and with pension obligations climbing and infrastructure bills piling up, several council members wanted a frank conversation about priorities.

On one side: the zoo is a genuine gem. It shelters rescued animals that can't be returned to the wild and draws tens of thousands of local families each year. Its affordable admission makes it one of the most accessible family destinations in the region, cutting or privatizing it would shift real costs onto families already paying among the highest property taxes in the state.

On the other side, $1.3 million is real money, and pension costs and deferred maintenance are real problems. Council kept the zoo funded this year, but called for a deeper audit. Community advocates are organizing to protect it.

So here's the question for EDH and Folsom neighbors: Is the zoo a luxury worth scrutinizing, or exactly the kind of institution that makes this a place worth calling home? Reply and let us know. ❤️
