Mentored youth are 52% more likely to attend school consistently, 46% less likely to try illegal drugs, and 27% less likely to start drinking within 18 months, compared to peers without such support. Programs like those run by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Sierra have quietly made this kind of impact possible—pairing kids with trusted mentors who stick around through the highs and lows.

Over time, mentorship builds more than individual success. It helps teens grow into confident, community-minded individuals who understand the value of connection. One study found that mentored youth are 92% more likely to volunteer and 75% more likely to take leadership roles in clubs or teams. These kids don’t just grow—they give back, often becoming mentors themselves. It’s a ripple effect, where one supportive relationship can lead to a whole neighborhood moving forward together.
