Lil City Voices | Real Talk

Can Mentoring Build Healthier Communities?

by Leo C.

When a teenager has a regular check‑in with a caring adult—someone who listens, encourages, and shows genuine interest—it does more than brighten one teen’s day. Mentored youth are 52% more likely to attend school consistently, 46% less likely to try illegal drugs, and 27% less likely to start drinking within 18 months, compared to peers without such support. Programs like those run by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Sierra have quietly made this kind of impact possible—pairing kids with trusted mentors who stick around through the highs and lows.

Over time, mentorship builds more than individual success. It helps teens grow into confident, community-minded individuals who understand the value of connection. One study found that mentored youth are 92% more likely to volunteer and 75% more likely to take leadership roles in clubs or teams. These kids don’t just grow—they give back, often becoming mentors themselves. It’s a ripple effect, where one supportive relationship can lead to a whole neighborhood moving forward together.

That support also reaches into homes. Mentored teens often report stronger relationships with parents and siblings. Just having someone to talk to outside of the family can reduce tension and bring calm to households that might otherwise feel overwhelmed. When a young person is grounded emotionally, it’s felt throughout the entire family dynamic.

And that, in the end, is the true strength of mentorship: it builds a foundation—person by person, family by family, generation by generation—for a more connected, caring society. 💖

If you're inspired by the power of these relationships and want to help youth in our community, consider volunteering as a mentor or donating to support their mission. Whether you can spare a few hours a month or a financial gift, there are ways for everyone to get involved and strengthen this network of support. Learn more about how to become a mentor or support the cause through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Sierra.
