Lil City Voices | Real Talk

What If AI Really Is Coming for Our Jobs?

— by Leo C.

I just turned 15. And yeah, I know I’m young. But this topic has been on my mind for years—ever since middle school, when I was making blog posts and videos about artificial intelligence and the future of work. You can check one out here: https://laststudent.substack.com

Why have I been thinking about this so much? Honestly—because of my dad. He used to work in finance at a big software company in Palo Alto and he’s been following AI since the early days. He’s not exactly chill about it either. He thinks there’s a real chance that AI is going to take a massive chunk of jobs, especially for people my age. Any job that’s done on a computer? Entry-level? Customer support? Marketing? Gone before I graduate.

My mom, though—she sees it differently. She’s more hopeful and thinks AI will mostly be good, at least for a while. It’ll help with medicine, learning, saving time… and maybe even give us tools to live better.

Me? I’m in the middle. But if I’m being honest… I lean toward my dad’s side.

Why AI Could Transform (and Replace) a Lot of Jobs:

  1. AI doesn’t sleep, get tired, or ask for a raise.

If it can do the same work, companies are going to use it. Fast.

  2. Companies exist to make profits.

And the biggest cost? Employees. Replacing a person with code = permanent savings.

  3. Entry-level workers are most vulnerable.

The people who are just starting out are usually the ones doing repeatable tasks—exactly what AI is best at automating.

  4. The AI race is global.

Governments aren’t just trying to make better chatbots—they’re trying to win. Whoever gets AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) first could control economics, military power, innovation… everything.

So even if we wanted to slow it down—can we?

What the New Grad Hiring Trend Might Be Telling Us

I posted this chart last week showing how new college grad employment is trending down. It’s weird. Because new grads are usually:

  • Cheaper to hire

  • Super motivated

  • Willing to learn and adapt

So why aren’t they getting hired? One possibility: AI and automation are already creeping in—and companies don’t need as many “eager entry-level” workers anymore. The work is shifting, and maybe we’re not ready for how fast.

“Just Learn a Trade” — Solid Advice? Kinda. But…

A lot of people in the comments suggested trade schools—and I agree. Electricians, welders, HVAC techs, mechanics… these jobs are hard to automate, and they’re in demand. But here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • We can’t all become tradespeople overnight. It takes training, tools, and a certain kind of mindset.

  • Even trades might not be 100% future-proof. Robotic construction? AI-assisted diagnostics? That’s already starting.

  • What happens when hundreds of thousands try to shift into trades at once? Will there still be room?

Community Connections: Why Local Still Matters

Even if AI doesn’t totally take over tomorrow, I still think it’s smart to start preparing—for anything. Not just by learning new skills or reading up on tech, but by actually building real connections with people around us. That’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.

I even started a Lil City Barter Network for our town—a place where we can trade skills, services, or stuff without always needing money. It’s small now, but I really believe it’s better to make those connections before we need them. Because whether it’s job stuff, money stress, or just how fast everything’s changing, having a strong local group—friends, neighbors, families—might matter more than any resume or algorithm.

So yeah, while the rest of the world is racing toward AI and smarter machines…we’re over here building Lil City.

One post, one connection, one neighbor at a time. And I think that actually matters.

🧠 Let’s Talk More

I don’t have all the answers—but I want to keep asking questions.

  • Are you worried about jobs and AI too?

  • Is your family talking about it at home?

  • What career advice are you getting right now—and does it still apply?

  • What should we be doing as a community to prepare?

Maybe it’s time we:

  • Talk with our neighbors, schools, and local leaders

  • Create small neighborhood groups or planning teams

  • Prepare for big changes—without panic, but with a plan
