Is Your Donation Headed for the Dumpster? 📦
— by Leo C.

We’ve all done it—dropped off a bag of donations at a local thrift store, feeling good about decluttering and helping a cause. But what happens when that bag contains items the store can’t actually sell? According to a recent article from The Spruce, many well-intentioned donations end up straight in the trash, creating a burden for the very charities we want to support.
The article explains that common items like used car seats, bike helmets, and even old vacuum cleaners are often tossed for safety reasons, as stores can’t risk selling something that might be damaged or recalled. Partially used makeup and skincare products are thrown away for hygiene, and reusable grocery bags often just become clutter. Knowing what not to donate is just as important as the act of donating itself.
So, what can we do instead? Before you load up the car, call your local thrift shop to ask about their specific guidelines. For those car seats or strollers, see if a friend or family member can use them. For broken items, a quick online search might show you how to repair or creatively upcycle them. A little extra thought can ensure our good intentions truly help our community and our planet.
