Recognizing the Signs Before It's Too Late

— by Leo C.

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and a statistic worth pausing over: nationwide, one in three young people experience abuse from someone they're dating before they turn 25. That's not a small number. That's someone in every friend group, every classroom, every neighborhood.

This Friday, the Greater Sacramento Urban League and Allcove Sacramento are doing something about it. From 5 to 7 p.m., they're hosting a Teen Dating Violence Awareness Event for anyone ages 12 to 26. The goal is simple but powerful: to help young people recognize the signs, know the resources, and understand what healthy relationships actually look like.

Because here's the thing, abuse isn't always obvious. It doesn't always leave bruises. It can look like controlling who you talk to, checking your phone without permission, making you feel small, or pressuring you into things you're not ready for. And when you're in it, it can be hard to see clearly.

That's why events like this matter. They create space for honest conversations, offer tools before they're needed, and remind young people they're not alone. If you know someone in this age group, pass this along. A two-hour workshop could change the way someone sees their relationship—or themselves.
