Should Lembi Park's Basketball Court Become Pickleball Courts?
— by Lil City Staff

The City of Folsom is weighing a proposal that would replace the outdoor basketball court at Lembi Community Park with four dedicated pickleball courts, paired with a new restroom building for all park users. City officials have emphasized that no final decision has been made, and the idea is still in the public input stage.
Much of the city's rationale comes down to upkeep. Officials point out that Folsom already manages 16 basketball courts citywide, several in poor condition, and note that nearby parks like Shores Mini Park and Levy Park could serve as alternatives. At the same time, the city has acknowledged that pickleball at Lembi regularly draws long waits to play. Residents hoping to preserve the basketball court have raised concerns of their own, particularly around the court's nighttime lighting, its value as a community gathering space, and doubts about whether nearby courts are realistic substitutes, especially for those who'd have to cross busier roads on foot to reach them.
The conversation has spilled well beyond city meetings and into local online discussions, where residents have gone back and forth on how often the basketball court actually gets used, questioned the funding details behind the project, and debated what "free" public access really means once private clubs and sponsorships are involved. For some, the disagreement seems to run deeper than basketball versus pickleball—touching on bigger questions about which community priorities get funded first.
At its core, this is a conversation about tradeoffs in a shared space that different groups use in very different ways. Is there a version of this plan that lets both sports coexist at Lembi, or does a single court eventually have to serve one purpose over the other?
