The Things We Can't Unsee

by Leo C.

Sometimes, it only takes a single moment—a sentence, an action, for our view of someone to change completely. An article highlighted those universal behaviors that make people instantly lose respect. The list was a mirror held up to our everyday interactions, from the inability to apologize to being needlessly cruel to those who can’t fight back.

What stood out wasn't just the rudeness, but the breaches of basic humanity. Treating service staff poorly, being mean to children or animals, or showing cruelty to people who are struggling. These aren't just awkward mistakes; they're glimpses into character. As one person noted, it’s about how someone treats living things they have power over.

Other damaging behaviors include lying when the truth is obvious or making others feel small just to feel important. These actions break the quiet trust that holds our community together. These actions break the quiet trust that holds our community together.

Ultimately, this was a reminder that respect isn't given with a title or an achievement. It's earned, minute by minute, through consistent actions. It’s built on empathy, integrity, and the courage to do the right thing even when no one is watching. And sometimes, it can be lost with just one choice.
