Lil City Voices | Real Talk

Analog vs. Digital: Which One Actually Wins?

by Leo C.

I told my dad the other day, "You would’ve loved growing up now." I mean, think about it: YouTube for learning anything, video games that feel like other worlds, e-bikes that fly up hills...all the cool stuff we have. He just laughed and said, "Nope. I wouldn’t trade my childhood for yours for anything." Total gut punch! He said back then, life wasn’t about screens. You felt it. Building forts with real wood, riding your bike everywhere till dark, talking face-to-face with friends. No apps, no scrolling. Just…being there.

Hearing his stories made me think. His childhood sounded kinda wild. Getting lost and finding your way without a phone map, fixing things with your hands, actually knocking on a friend’s door instead of texting. No endless videos to watch, just making your own fun outside. It sounds messy and maybe a little scary sometimes, but also really free. Like the world was bigger because you were really in it, not just watching it through a screen.

Then he said something that stuck with me: "Your generation? You’re like fish in an aquarium. You see everything, but you’re always behind glass." That hit hard. I can chat with ten friends online but still feel lonely in my room. I can build anything in a game, but I’ve never built something real with tools. My world is huge online, but sometimes it feels small. Safe. Distant. His world looked smaller on a map, but he touched it.

So who wins? Old-school or digital? Honestly? Neither. And both. His childhood sounds amazing. Raw, hands-on, totally real. But mine? I’ve got the whole world’s knowledge in my pocket. I can learn guitar in a week, connect with people across the globe, or explore ideas my dad never dreamed of. The trade-off? Maybe we miss out on getting our hands dirty. On the patience of waiting for things. On the quiet moments where you just…think. His world was about doing. Ours is often about watching. So maybe the real win is realizing we can have both. We just gotta remember to look up, step outside, and live it sometimes–not just watch it through the glass.
