What Teens Turning to AI Is Really Telling Us

— by Lil City Staff

More young people are choosing to open an app before they open up to a person. Recent surveys back this up: a majority of teens now use AI chatbots regularly, and a growing share turn to them for something surprising—emotional support, not just homework help. It's easy to frame this as a screen-time issue. But maybe it says more about what's happening around teens than what's happening on their phones.

A chatbot doesn't roll its eyes, sigh, or say "you're too sensitive." It just listens. That should give any parent, teacher, or mentor pause, not about the technology, but about whether young people are finding that same patience in the humans around them. Many teens learn early that certain feelings aren't quite welcome, whether at the dinner table, in the classroom, or in casual conversation. A chatbot never makes that mistake, which may be exactly why it feels safer to talk to. Is it possible that kids simply have fewer safe adults to turn to these days, or just different ones than before?

Still, comfort isn't the same as connection. An app can't notice when someone goes quiet at lunch, can't show up after a hard day, can't say "I love you" and mean it. What teens may really be asking for is an adult who says "tell me more" instead of "you're fine," and who can stay present without rushing to fix things. Then again, is that too simple an explanation, or is emotional silence at home really pushing kids toward machines instead of people?

So the real question isn't whether AI is good or bad for teens, it's what it's revealing about the spaces around them. And maybe the conversation worth having isn't about banning apps, but about what one small thing could make "talk to someone" feel like a real option again, instead of just advice.
