9/11 Through My Eyes

by Leo C.

I wasn’t born when September 11th happened. But when I asked my dad about it, I could see how much it still weighs on him. He told me how that day changed not just the country, but also the way people felt about safety, trust, and even each other. It wasn’t just news, it was personal for everyone who lived through it.

For me, I only know 9/11 through what I’ve read and watched. The planes, the towers, the chaos—it feels like I’m standing at the edge of something massive, seeing only the surface, but still sensing the depth behind it. Every headline and documentary reminds me this wasn’t just an event, it was a turning point.

I’ve learned that after 9/11, airports, schools, even daily life in America shifted. Entire wars began overseas. Words like “homeland security” and “terrorism” became part of everyday language. And even though I wasn’t alive, I can feel how those changes ripple into the world I live in now.

What stands out most are the stories of courage—the firefighters running into danger, strangers helping strangers, and communities uniting in grief and strength. It’s a reminder that tragedy can reveal both the worst and the best in people.

Even though I didn’t experience that day, I understand why it’s remembered every year. It reminds us of loss, but also of how people came together. It’s strange to think that something I never lived through can still shape the country, and even me, today.
