The Helping Hand You Can't Forget
— by Leo C.

Sometimes, the most powerful change starts not with a grand plan, but with a personal memory. For Reece Hulse, a student at Del Campo High School, that memory is his brother’s 100-day hospital stay after a traumatic brain injury. "It’s a deep thing," Reece shared. "That’s kind of why we’re here and what we’re doing today." That "here" was the glittering 11th annual gala for Kids Helping Kids Sacramento, where 850 guests gathered not just for an evening of music and auctions, but to transform personal pain into community hope.
What began in 2012 as a simple act—students and teachers helping a homeless peer—has grown into a remarkable force. To date, this student-led organization has raised over $1.6 million. But as their supervising teacher, notes, the real story isn't just in the dollars. "It’s now the transformation of my students' hearts," he says. The funds provide practical, vital support for families navigating pediatric cancer, covering hotel stays, meals, and care for siblings often overlooked during a crisis.
The gala itself is a testament to their serious commitment. CEO Regan Johnson calls it what it is: a business. "You have high school students that are running a business here," she said. "We’re making real money." Yet, the engine of that business is pure compassion. For Reece, the drive is rooted in gratitude for the help his own family once received. "I just want to spend my time helping the people that need it most, like I needed."
As the last song played at the Harris Center, these young philanthropists proved that the future is in caring hands. They are building more than a charity; they are building a legacy of empathy, one helping hand at a time.
