Are Screens Teaching Our Kids the Wrong Lessons?

— by Lil City Staff

Remember when schools had computer labs? A single room, desktop computers lined up in rows, and maybe one class period a week to use them. Those days are gone. Now, many kindergartners are handed an iPad on their first day of school. And once the pandemic sent classrooms online, those screens never left.

Here's what's happening: most elementary school teachers say their students receive school-issued devices by kindergarten. A growing number of teachers are required to use mostly digital materials, because that's what their district mandates. Even the tests are on screens now, so practice for those tests has to be, too. What started as a tool has quietly become the backbone of the classroom.

But here's the problem no one saw coming. Research shows students reading physical books have six to eight times better comprehension than reading on a screen. And this generation of students is the first in modern history to score lower on standardized tests than the one before it, something experts directly tie to classroom screen use.

Now states are starting to pay attention. Some are looking at banning tablets for the youngest kids. Others want to certify that educational tech doesn't use addictive algorithms. Sixteen states introduced legislation this year to reevaluate screen time in the classroom. The question isn't whether screens have a place in education. The question is: have we handed our kids a powerful tool, or have we let that tool take over the job of teaching?
