There's something quietly powerful about a dog that doesn't know your history. It doesn't care what happened before, what mistakes were made, or what the world outside has decided about you. It just shows up, tail wagging, ready to be fed, walked, and loved. That simple truth is at the heart of Paws on the Block, a program built on the idea that sometimes healing looks like a leash in one hand and a second chance in the other.

The Paws on the Block pairs rescue dogs from Foothill Dog Rescue with incarcerated participants at Folsom State Prison, giving each dog several weeks of hands-on training, socialization, and care before it's ready for adoption. But spend even a little time hearing from the people involved, and it becomes clear the dogs aren't the only ones being prepared for something new. Participants take on real responsibility, learn patience, and often describe the experience as the first time in a long while that something depended on them in a good way. "They don't judge," one participant shared. "Doesn't matter the color of my skin, how tall, short or what I did in the past. And it's a reminder that despite my past, I still matter."

That's the quiet magic of this program. It's not just about producing well-trained, adoptable dogs, though it does that too. It's about two groups of overlooked lives, dogs waiting for a home and people waiting for a chance, meeting in the middle and changing each other along the way.

This September marks two years since the program began, and the community is invited to celebrate that milestone on Wednesday, September 16th, from 5:00 to 9:00 PM at Brickyard in El Dorado Hills. Expect good food, live music from Bobby Dickson of Cash Prophets, a silent auction, and plenty of dogs to meet in person. It's a chance to see, up close, what two years of second chances actually looks like.
