The Ride That Wasn't Just Fun

— by Lil City Staff

It started as a Sunday afternoon drive near the Raley's shopping center. A woman watched as a large group of boys on electric bikes weaved through traffic, ran red lights, and nearly caused at least three accidents in just minutes. Her stomach turned as she saw cars swerve and brake. She pulled over to speak with them, hoping a calm word might prevent a tragedy.

What happened next was deeply unsettling. A driver passing by yelled out the window, "Just let them ride!" The boys fed off that energy, shouting back, dismissing every concern. One of them turned and called the woman a name. In that moment, a well-meaning attempt to protect turned into a lesson in how quickly respect can evaporate.

This woman isn't against kids having fun. She's a parent herself. She knows e-bikes can be a wonderful way to explore and stay active. But what she witnessed was not harmless joy. It was life-threatening recklessness, and the reaction from both a stranger and the children showed a troubling disregard for safety and basic decency. As she later wrote, "No parent wants to get a call that their child has been injured…or worse."

Her plea to parents was simple: talk to your kids. Teach them traffic laws. Help them understand that cars cannot always stop in time. And remind them that disrespect toward adults who are trying to protect them is never acceptable. This is not about blaming an entire generation or taking away bikes. It's about waking up before a tragedy forces us to. Because when a child falls, everyone loses.
