Lil City Voices | Community Corner

Electric Bikes and Young Riders: A Community Wake-Up Call 📣

by Leo C.

It’s a scene more and more residents are noticing: groups of teens on electric bikes weaving through cars, holding up traffic, and darting across intersections. What some see as kids just “having fun,” others warn could turn tragic in an instant.

Over the past week, local neighbors have shared stories of close calls, drivers slamming on brakes, teens riding into oncoming lanes, even blocking intersections to perform wheelies.

The conversations quickly turned toward safety, responsibility, and parenting. Are e-bikes street legal for under-16 riders? Do kids know they’re subject to the same traffic laws as cars? And perhaps the hardest question of all—where do parents step in?

Police have said they’re aware of the issue, but many neighbors feel more needs to be done before a serious accident happens. In the meantime, the message is clear: we’re all sharing the road, and safety has to come first.
