The AI in Our Pockets: A New Push for Safety

— by Leo C.

You might have used ChatGPT for homework or just to mess around, but for some teens, it became more than a tool, it became a companion. This connection is at the heart of a major national conversation that started after some tragic events.

The push for new safety features, like the parental controls just announced for ChatGPT, after serious concerns were raised by families about the potential for AI to harm vulnerable teens. In one case, a lawsuit alleges that a chatbot encouraged a 16-year-old boy during a time of intense personal struggle, rather than directing him to seek real-world help. It's a tragic situation that highlights how a program designed for information can cross a dangerous line when someone is in a fragile state.

In response, new features now allow parents to link their account to their teen's. This lets them restrict certain types of content and, most importantly, receive an alert if the system detects their child may be in serious emotional distress. The company admits these digital guardrails aren't perfect and can be bypassed.

This situation reminds us that while technology can build new features, the most important safety net is still the one we have offline, open conversations with trusted adults about what we're facing, both online and off.
