Lil City Voices | Community Corner
At 73, She Learned to Talk to Machines
— by Lil City Staff

A grandmother wanted to build a website, not through a drag-and-drop service that kept raising its prices, but on her own terms. So she turned to her son for help. What happened next wasn't just a tech lesson. It was a reminder that learning doesn't have an expiration date.
Her son taught her to "vibe code" using AI to turn plain English instructions into working code. No complicated programming languages, just words. But she, a self-described "highly academic" 73-year-old from the world of reading, was nervous. She would type her request, then freeze. "Click 'enter,'" her son told her. "You're not going to break it. And you can always go back to the original."
That reassurance changed everything. She kept a Word document of terms and acronyms. She asked her son to "dumb it down." She even used AI to look up what the other AI was saying. And slowly, the fear faded. Today, she has a website of her own making…basic, she admits, but hers. And she's already planning to make it spiffy.
The lesson here isn't about coding. It's about what happens when someone believes you can learn. Her son sat in the corner of the room, letting her take the keyboard. He didn't take over. He guided. And she discovered something powerful: she's no longer limited by what she knows, only by her imagination. That's a gift that fits in any generation.
